Work is starting on the Hindhead tunnel for the A3 London - Portsmouth road. The tunnel will have no access for non-motorised transport, and the scheme cost is £371 million at current prices. By contrast, the hospital in Guilford nearby is threatened with closure for want of £70 million. The plan calls for the existing A3 to be buried, and the existing byway widened slightly to cope with horses, cycles, off-road vehicles and pedestrians. The inquiry report was unsympathetic to ALL of the arguments put by those advocating cycle use. The decisions preceded the Stern report on climate change; one hopes that this might pose a watershed for such paucity of decision making, but there seems to be no evidence of this in government thinking.
Have a look at our arguments behind the case.
Have a look at the Godalming to Guildford cycle path...
For several years we have been challenging Waverley and Godalming councils to improve cycle access in Godalming town centre and in the routes that connect to it. Have a look at the story so far. (Under construction)
Over 2006 and 2007 the Godalming area, and including local villages, is the subject of an assessment programme for market towns known as a 'Healthcheck'. This is a community-driven action which plans to analyse local problems, provide evidence for the causes, and suggest solutions. The community is then potentially eligible to apply for various grants to deal with those problems.
Unsurprisingly, work so far has identified transport as a major local issue, and the rise in dominance of the private motor car in particular as an issue that somehow cannot be allowed to carry on unchecked. Our interest in cycle transport is clearly part of this picture. We're taking part in the Healthcheck process to help gather the evidence that is so necessary, and hope that it will show how a more balanced mix of transport methods might improve the quality of life in the area.
The Godalming Healthcheck also has a website.
We firmly believe in the principle of rail and cycle integrated transport, and have problems with the late 2004 revised cycle policy of South West trains. Their solutions to carrying cycles on the new rolling stock are not perfect either, as this movie might make clearer...
In May 2005 we hosted the joint Cycle Campaign Network (CCN) & CTC conference in Godalming. We packed a lot into a fascinating few hours - see our conference pages for full details.
